From Elton, 2017, Cloth Seals: An Illustrated Guide to the Identification of Lead Seals Attached to Cloth, p.270, "Over a dozen of these seals, which were found in Poland, are recorded on the Euro-Plombs web site. The trees are a rebus for French ‘bois’. This example is one from about 30 found in Gdansk, Poland (Tomasz Maćkowski, private communication). “Peter du Bois was an ‘alien’ merchant; the family had come over from Lisle in Flanders. Du Bois was born in Canterbury and was a merchant in London by about 1618. He made his will in 1637. His name is in the cash book of Tiverton clothier George Hartnoll (the only ‘alien’ there), entries for the early to mid-1620s in particular. Hartnoll attended Exeter market regularly to buy serge which he brought back to Tiverton for finishing and then dispatch to London. I suggest that this seal was applied by Peter Du Bois in London to a piece of Devon serge, probably made in Exeter. It might have been supplied by Tiverton clothier George Hartnoll, who definitely had dealings with Du Bois, or alternatively an Exeter man. I note (from ODNB online) Du Bois was connected with one Hugh Morrell, a London merchant with Exeter connections.” [Peter Maunder, private communication]."
