According to an advert appearing in The Land Magazine Thomas & Son appear to have been providers of antipests, pesticides and fertilizers. The advert features the product 'Smearoleum' and claims the company to have been established for over 40 years.As the publication is dated 1899 this suggests 1860 to be a reasonable estimate of their beginning.

They also appear to have been elected to the Royal English Arboricultural Society in 1899.
