Cloth Seal, Alnage, Crown over Double Rose, Image by StuE, Found by Carlb.
Found at West Firle (Firle V rally), 18mm, 2.8g.
One disc of two or four disc alnage seal showing a crown over a double rose.
Probably from a crowned rose series of alnage county seals, see p.273, Provenanced Leaden Cloth Seals by Geoffrey Egan, Sub-Department of Medieval Archaeology, University College, University of London, submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, 1987.
Very similar crowned rose images can be found on No.140, Fig.27 and No.181, Fig.28 in Geoff Egan, 'Lead cloth seals and related items in the B.M. (B.M.occ.papers 93)'. These are alnage seals associated with William and Mary and Charles II.
