Identified by Paul Cannon, "Based on the following I wonder if this is a cement/lime seal of Tolhurst and Sons of Northfleet (Gravesend). It seems to incorporate the ‘red lion’ which was most probably the trade mark/logo of the firm.
The Westminster Gazette of 29 August 1908, p 15, records, under ‘New Registrations’, “Tolhurst and Sons, with a capital of £50,000 in £100 shares, will acquire the assets of A. Tolhurst, Red Lion Works, Northfleet, and carry on the business of manufacturers of cement, lime etc.”
In a case brought, titled, “The Damage to the Cragside” records the owners of the steamship ‘Cragside’ seeking recovery against “Messres Tolhurst and Sons, the owners or occupiers of the Red Lion Wharf, at Northfleet.” [Lloyds List, 29 April, 1904, p 8]
The last cement plant in Northfleet ceased operation in 2008."
