Cloth Seal, Packer's Seal, John Lodge & Co, Image & Found by John Harvey.
Found in Ontario, Canada, 34mm.
627 / 36 (scratched) // *I.LODGE* curving down / & Co / PACKERS / foliate design / (LO)NDON curving up
From Paul Cannon, "I believe your cloth seal is specifically a packer’s seal and probably reads “I.LODGE / & Co / PACKERS / LONDON”. John Lodge & Co are recorded as ‘army-packers’ at 2, Garlick Hill, London in the Post Office Annual Directory, 1808. The letter ‘I’ is an earlier form of the letter ‘J’. The seal would presumably have been attached to cloth to be used for army uniforms. Post Office Annual Directory, 1808."
The scratched numbers probably represent an order number 627 and the length of cloth - 36 yards.
Another example was found in northern Michigan near Fort Michilimackinac by Alex Fitol in 2022.
