The following is from the Lancashire Evening Post, 21 December 1929. “How Mussels are Made Safe: Cleansing Process Explained. The way by which mussels that have become polluted and cleansed and thus made fit for human consumption is thus described in ‘Armchair Science’. [the article describes in detail this process at the end of which is the following]…….. after an hour or two in this chlorinated water during which the mussels keep their shells tightly closed, they are taken out, and placed in sterilised bags. These are sealed by means of a LEAD SEAL bearing the ministry’s device, and are despatched to market …….”. See The British Newspaper Archive.
